Welcome to Squirrels Class

Year 2 is the last year in Key Stage 1, and an important time for the children to learn independence as they begin to grow up and take on new challenges. 

A typical day in Squirrels class includes English, Maths, phonics/spellings and a blocked curriculum subject.  Within these subjects we will learn about The Great Fire of London, the Amazon Rainforest and many more interesting and exciting things! There is an emphasis this year on science and PSHE, and these will be taught weekly alongside other blocked curriculum subjects.   

There will be two PE sessions a week, and the children are lucky enough to have one of their weekly PE sessions taught by a qualified PE instructor, whose expertise include games, gymnastics and dance.  

In Squirrels we love reading, and we encourage the children to read every day to develop their fluency and pace. We are currently challenging ourselves to read different genres, in different locations and to different people. Have a look at the recommended reading list for good quality fiction, non-fiction, poetry and rhyme books that will support and challenge your child’s reading through the year.  

For times tables, the school uses Times Table Rockstars (TTRS), a sequenced programme of times table practice. In Year 2 we follow a daily programme of online and paper work where the children practice their times tables for recall and speed.
