Foxes Class
Welcome to Foxes Class
A typical day in Foxes class will involve a reading and writing lesson, a Maths lesson that encompasses Times Tables Rockstars and problem of the day. We also have a weekly discrete arithmetic lesson. In addition we will study a full range of other subjects; Science, History, Geography, Art, ICT, Music, PE, RE, French and PSHE on a rotating timetable.
In year 6 we are keen readers and expected to read independently or aloud in addition to our weekly homework. We have an excellent selection of books in class for independent reading, as well as a rich literature selection for our core English lessons. On a Thursday we enjoy ‘reading time with Mrs Mo’ where we meet as a whole school for story telling.
Our English curriculum for reading is systematically mapped with a rich and diverse literature spine at the core, the chosen books offer children breadth and depth of social, moral and ethical topics. Our reading curriculum explicitly teaches fluency, vocabulary and key comprehension strategies. Children read every day as part of the curriculum as well as reading for pleasure. As part of our writing curriculum, children write in a variety of genres such as discursive speeches, explanation texts and stories with a moral. The key components of writing are taught in step by step sequenced lessons to ensure all children become confident, fluent writers.
Our spellings curriculum – CUSP – has been purposefully built around the principles of evidence-led practice. This is to ensure that pupils acquire deep knowledge about the English spelling system and that this learning endures. The curriculum is written cumulatively to allow children to move backwards and forwards depending on their starting points.

In Maths we use White Rose for our core teaching, our maths lessons have elements of fluency, reasoning and problem solving within them. In addition to 4 core maths lessons each week, we have one lesson focused purely on the skills of arithmetic.
For times tables, the school uses Times Table Rockstars (TTRS), a sequenced programme of times table practice. In Year 6 we follow a daily programme of online and paper work where the children practice their times tables for recall and speed.
The overall aim in Year 6 is to ensure all children are prepared and have the appropriate tools to tackle challenges that they may face throughout all subjects and outside of school. The learning environment is encouraging, inspiring, rewarding and fun and there are always high expectations of the children.
In Summer term, the Year 6 enjoy a 3 day residential to Grafham Water. The aims of this residential are:
- Working with others, developing teamwork, communication and respect for others
- Improving own performance, self awareness, confidence, taking responsibility
- Problem solving, planning, leadership, creativity
- Developing Outdoor Activity skills
It is also a great way to end their primary journey with their class family.
